Conclusion of Horror Opening Scenes Analysis

After having looked at several opening sequences all from the horror genre, I noticed a pattern in some of the conventions which they all included. For example, every opening sequence all had some kind of sinister/creepy non-diegetic music played at some point throughout the scene, whether it was slow and quiet or fast and loud. This is because, music plays a massive part within horror films as it controls the moods of the targeted audience and if done properly gives them the full affects of watching a horror film.

Each sequence all had low level lighting for the majority of the scenes, and proportions of darkness. This helps to add to the frightening mood being created, and to also make the genre of the film very clear.

As well as this, the majority of the opening sequences were set in the night time, for similar reasons above. But mainly because bad things are generally known to more likely happen within the night, due to the lack of sight and therefore things being easier to get away with.

Most of the opening sequences included vulnerable characters, such as women and young children. Normally because they are less capable of fighting back, and very limited in ways in which they could protect themselves. Especially with no one else around, which is how they are shown within the opening scenes I looked at. This follows on from the use of isolation found commonly within horror films, and also the ones that I studied. This is normally used, as it helps create a better storyline 'with no help around for the victim',

Lastly, the title of the film (which is normally shown at some point within the film but usually the beginning) is presented in a spooky font in order to match the genre of the film. For example, I looked at Friday the 13th as one of my sequences and it's film title was written in red to perhaps present blood. On top of this, production companies are also found at the beginning of a film and often certain ones are used that specifiy in a particular genre. Therefore all of the sequences I had looked at were produced by companies that specified in the horror genre.

Titles For Our Opening Sequence

We have used After Effects to create the titles that will appear on our opening sequence. These titles include: the name of the director, the names of the main actors, the names of the producers and the title of the film. We will add these titles once we have organised the editing of the footage.
